Travelling with CPAP
Travelling with a PAP therapy this winter? Most portable PAP therapy devices do not use distilled water. Some use a Heat Moisture Exchanger instead, which helps to keep things compact and lightweight. There are several travel options available, but which one will meet your needs? Contact Breathe Easy for more information on what system is best for you.
Tips for PAP Therapy Travelers
- Always keep a copy of your prescription on hand. A physical copy of your prescription should be kept in a safe and readily accessible place. You may also keep a digital copy on your phone.
- Always pack your PAP therapy device and accessories in your carry-on bag. Packing your equipment in checked baggage will put it at risk for being damaged or lost. Your PAP therapy equipment is deemed as a medical device and is not counted as part of your allowance for a carry-on bag.
- Be prepared to remove your PAP therapy device from its carry case when passing through airport security. You may be asked to place your PAP therapy device in a bin to have it examined.
- Do not bring distilled water with you for your trip, unless it meeds the allowance of permitted liquids, usually no more than 100 mL. It is best to purchase distilled water upon arriving at your destination.
- If distilled water is not available, you may opt to run your device without water (making sure that the humidity setting is turned off). If water is required for a more comfortable sleep, you may use regular bottled water of a safe, clean source of drinking water. Change your water daily!
- Most PAP therapy devices can run on 110 – 240 V. If your device has this specification, then you will only require an adapter in most countries to be able to plug your system into their outlets.
Did You Know That?
Regular, non-distilled water causes mineral deposits to build-up in you humidifier chamber. You may be able to remove this build-up using one-part vinegar to two-parts water, allowing it to soak in your chamber for 20 minutes. Rinse well with warm water before use. For hard to remove mineral build-up, you may have to purchase a replacement chamber.
